Unusual art lesson in Grade 3
As part of a current unit of inquiry on disabilities, third-grade students took part in a unique art lesson in which they were exposed to the disadvantages faced by people with disabilities.
The students explored the topic in a hands-free painting lesson. The children had the opportunity to examine and evaluate themselves through the lens of people who struggle daily with their disabilities. They also learned about the stories of people who have a disorder characterised by the absence of arms, but are able to draw strength from these deficits and make up for their lack of limb dexterity. One of them was Mariusz Kędzierski, a Polish drawing artist without hands, who has won prizes in international competitions and has exhibited his work abroad, including in New York. In 2013, he won second place in the Best Global competition in Vienna.
It was an extraordinary lesson in sensitivity and empathy for the third-graders.
