Día de los Muertos
Last Friday, 28 October, classes 5a and 7a participated in the celebration of the Mexican Day of the Dead. The celebration was organised by the Mexican Embassy in Poland at the Kinoteka cinema and consisted of three parts. The students admired the traditional Mexican altar, learned how it is built, learned about the most important symbols and how it is assembled. They then watched the Mexican film Día de los Muertos about the tradition of Día de los Muertos in Mexico. At the end, the students took part in a dance workshop, during which they learnt the basic rhythms and steps of Mexican folk dances, which date back to pre-Columbian cultures (the Pajarita dance, the Papalotl butterfly dance). After the workshop, students could buy sugar skulls to decorate themselves. The day was special because it was not only full of activities, but allowed them to feel the unusual atmosphere of the joyful but also nostalgic holiday of Día de los Muertos, which in Mexico is one of the most important of the year.
