Chinese or English? That is the question!

PYP students learn these two languages, and recently third graders have asked themselves which one is the most popular. The answer was not obvious. However, with the help of various sources, it turned out that both languages are popular depending on the statistics, i.e. the number of people for whom a given language is native or how many people simply know the language. These and other questions were the basis for developing the topic of languages. The reason for our joint research was a UOI which main idea is: “Signs and symbols are part of a human-made system that facilitate local and global communication” and the European Day of Foreign Languages, which we celebrate on September 26th.

On this occasion, third-grade students prepared a school assembly for the PYP community. The aim of this festival was to familiarize the rest of the students with the importance of language for the community. The students presented what is a mother tongue and how to protect endangered languages. We focused on dialects occurring in Poland and we talked in „Warsiawsk”- the dialect of Warsaw. Additionally, students had the opportunity to learn artificial languages, especially Esperanto. Third-graders also conducted surveys among other students and teachers on the topic of mother tongue and foreign languages. The results of the survey were presented during the school assembly. Most of our students speak Polish at home, then Russian / Ukrainian, German, Spanish or French.

We decided to immediately transfer our PYP students to the world of artificial languages, and we managed to do it thanks to an organized concert of a singer who created her own language and performs her songs in it. Ms Anna Hamela gave an interview to the students of grades 3a and 3b and then willingly shared with us what is beautiful and important for her,- a talent. It caused a stir among the audience, who hop … started to dance to the rhythm of the music. To this day, we hear memories of this event and voices about listening to the artist’s songs at home with parents. We are very happy about this meeting and we will look for more inspiration.
