Today, students from grade 2 had the opportunity to take part in workshops titled “Nature’s Inventions – Inspirations for the Future,” organized by the Museum and Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The students participated in sessions introducing them to the world of bionics, a field of science that examines how humans draw inspiration from nature and use it to create modern technological solutions. During the meeting, the students learned how observing animals and plants has led to the development of many inventions used today. They also saw how solutions found in nature are applied in engineering, optics, robotics, and the design of new materials. An important part of the workshop involved working with optical microscopes, thanks to which the students were able to closely observe butterfly wings, insect mouthparts, and their eyes, allowing them to notice extraordinary structures invisible to the naked eye. In this way, we connected the study of the adaptations of plants and animals—topics from the recently completed Unit of Inquiry — with the analysis of inventions inspired by the natural world.
