Last Tuesday, 19 November, our primary school was visited by special guests from the Faculty of Artes Liberales at the University of Warsaw: Prof. Katarzyna Marciniak and Dr Sonya Nevin. Prof. Katarzyna Marciniak, who is one of the greatest contemporary scholars of antiquity and its popularisation among children and young people, introduced the students to the extraordinary world of Greek and Roman myths and their reception in the world today. She talked about how mythological motifs surround us and are present in our lives every day, making the students understand even better that they are part of this wonderful, timeless culture. The meeting took the form of an interview and was led by the talented and inquisitive 6 grades students: Lusia, Marysia, Frania, Basia and Maja.
Following the meeting, 6 grade students, who are exploring ancient mythology in Polish this term, took part in a workshop entitled ‘Animating the Antient World’. This was conducted by Dr Sonya Nevin, co-creator of animations based on scenes decorating Greek vases and other
types of ancient artefacts. The students learned the secrets of bringing the ancient world to life from drawings and, inspired by this, created their own designs on paper.
Both, the cultural meeting and the workshop took place in a wonderful, open and warm atmosphere. The students were eager to ask questions and share their thoughts with the guests, and the researchers patiently and thoroughly answered and listened to them.
We would like to thank Prof. Katarzyna Marciniak and Dr Sonya Nevin for taking the time to visit our school and introduce the students to the extraordinary world of ancient Greece and Rome. It was a very valuable experience for the whole school community. We would also like to thank the initiator and organiser of the meeting, Marta Torres.
