Building Bridges Across Cultures – virtual exchange project with Taiwan

Last year, our 4th-grade students had the unique opportunity to participate in a virtual cultural exchange project with a class from Taiwan, thanks to the initiative of our Chinese teacher, Ms Louise. The project began when our teacher connected with a Taiwanese educator through social media, and it quickly evolved into an enriching cross-cultural collaboration. Throughout the semester, students from both schools shared films, written work, and, ultimately, exchanged personal letters and small gifts.

As part of their final project, our students created posters that included three key sections: a self-introduction, an explanation of the gift they selected and interesting facts they had learned about Taiwan. These posters not only helped students express their creativity but also served as part of their final grade, with most students performing excellently.

Over the summer, our teacher sent the posters and gifts to Taiwan, and in return, she brought back items from the Taiwanese students, which were later shared with our 5th graders on the First Day of their New School Year.

This project aligns with one of the core principles of IB education—developing international mindedness and fostering an appreciation for cultural diversity. Through this exchange, our students deepened their understanding of different cultures, enhancing their ability to communicate across borders and respect global perspectives. It was a valuable experience that helped strengthen our students’ global awareness and intercultural understanding.
