A visit to the warehouse of an online store selling products for diabetics

As part of the Unit of Inquiry “The choices people make affect their health and well-being,” students from class 2A visited the warehouse of an online store that packages medicines and medical equipment for people with diabetes.

During the meeting, the children learned what diabetes is and what role sugar, the main source of energy for the body, plays in our bodies. Experts explained what insulin is and why its presence is so important for the proper functioning of the body. The students also learned about devices that help diabetics on a daily basis – a glucometer, sensor, insulin pump, and pen.

We also talked about healthy eating, pointing out the differences between simple and complex carbohydrates. The practical part included interesting experiments and games – the children checked how much sugar is found in popular products such as drinks, sweets, fruits, and vegetables. We also observed how sugar dissolves in water at different temperatures, which helped us understand how physical activity supports the body in regulating sugar levels.

The students also watched with great interest as their teachers – with smiles and courage – agreed to wear sensors, so that the children could now track their glucose levels together with

them and better understand how such a system works in practice. At the end, the students took part in a quiz to reinforce their newly acquired knowledge.
