Spain is a wonderful country not only because of its traditions and culture, but also because of its nature. There are radically different ecosystems ranging from green mountains in the north to deserts in the south. To protect these natural environments, Spain has built a huge network of stunning national and natural parks. These protected areas give people a chance to experience some of the wildest and most untouched beauty in all of Europe. This article will showcase five of the most breathtaking examples of out sixteen Spanish national parks.
1.Sierra de Guadarrama National Park (Guadarrama Mountain Range National Park)
Sierra de Guadarrama is the fifth largest national park in Spain. It is located between Madrid and Segonia and it covers nearly 34 000 hectares. In the 19th and 20th century, these areas were famous in hunting, scientific and artistic circles, but the park was officially created on 25th of June 2013 after a series of long discussions and ecological investigations. The main goal of Sierra de Guaderrama became protection of unique pine forests, preserved glacial lakes, and rare animal and bird species, one of which is the Spanish imperial eagle which is the rarest bird of prey in Europe and once was on the brink of extinction.
2.Cabañeros National Park (Cabañeros National Park)
Canañeros National Park is located in the Montes de Toledo, and it covers the area of two provinces: the northwest of Ciudad Real and the southwest of Toledo. The area of today’s park has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Archaeologists have found traces of ancient settlements, rock paintings, and the remains of Roman roads.
The park’s name derives from the word cabaña, meaning „hut”. This was the name given to the simple houses of the shepherds and charcoal burners who lived in the mountains and forests.
The area was first designated as a nature reserve in 1988, and it was officially declared a national park in 1995. There visitors may see large herds of deer and wild boar.

3.Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park (Aigüestortes and Lake San Mauricio National Park)
Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici is the only national park located in Catalonia. This is one of the oldest national parks in Spain as it was created on 21st of October 1955. Aigüestortes means „winding waters” and there are numerous winding rivers and swamps in the park. Estany de Sant Maurici¸ on the other hand, is the name of the preserve’s most famous lake. Apart from it, there are over 200 other mountain lakes of glacial origin, and the peaks of Pyrenees offer captivating and breathtaking views, which are something one must see at least once in their lifetime.
4.Sierra de las Nieves National Park (Snow Mountain Range National Park)
Sierra de las Nieves National Park is located in the south of the country. The national park is famous for rare pinsapo fir forests and deep gorges. Pinsapo trees are the park’s main treasure as they are considered living relics of the Ice Age.
In winter, there is often a lot of snow in the mountains. That’s why the name of the national park translates to “mountains of snow”, which perfectly suits the park’s landscape.
Moreover, Sierra de las Nieves is one of the youngest national parks in Spain. It was established in 2019 when the Council of Ministers proposed the nature reserve to be elevated to a higher status.
5.Sierra Nevada National Park (Snowy Mountain Range National Park)
Sierra Nevada is Spain’s largest national park in terms of highland area. In 1986, the region became a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It was officially granted the status of a national park in 1999 to protect its high-mountain habitats and glacial landscapes.
Speaking of landscapes, the park is home to the highest mountain in mainland Spain, Mulhacén, at 3,479 meters. Tourists visiting these areas often encounter Spanish ibex right along the trails. These animals are symbols of the park. Another possible symbol could be the famous white villages of the Alpujarras region, which are located on the southern slopes.
Spain’s incredible ecosystems prove the country is much more than just a vacation spot with delicious desserts and sunny resorts. A closer look at five national parks reveals the true diversity of this paradise. There is much more history in the country besides old cities.
