Music Medicine for Mental Health

Julia Dubelska

Have you noticed how your favourite song can change your mood?  Whether it is pop, jazz, rock or classical, music has a way of connecting to your feelings to get ready in the morning or relax after school. We don’t realise how many of us are struggling with different mental disorders, but music is a powerful tool that has a great impact on our mental health. Here are three ways that music impacts how we function.

Mood Booster

It is unbelievable how the right songs can improve our mood. Many students say that listening to upbeat tunes gives them more energy in the gym and it feels like a shot of dopamine while working out.  Cheerful songs can make us feel motivated and confident.  Many of us listen to music while studying at home or school because it helps us focus on our various assignments.

Stress Reliver

A student’s life can get very stressful. Numerous tests, exams, lessons or even interactions with teachers, not to mention the intricacies of teenage social life and peer pressure, can impact our emotions. To escape all of it, we can put on headphones and just try to relax. Calm music can lower your cortisol, main stress hormone responsible for regulating metabolism, as well as blood sugar and pressure. A peaceful melody helps your brain slow down, relax your body, and improve the quality of your sleep.

Flip Side

On the other hand, listening to music while walking can be dangerous as we may drown in our song and not pay attention to the surroundings, and playing music too loud will destroy our ear drums.

All in all, music is something that you can easily access in your everyday life. It can help you in situations when words are not enough and you do not know how you can express yourself. Therapists recommend music and you don’t need a prescription for this amazing medicine. Therefore, whenever you feel on edge or are overwhelmed by sadness, turn on your favourite tunes and remember that life is beautiful.
