Our school has taken many opportunities to introduce young minds to the arts, but our meetings with famous people have proven to be some of the most insightful of such events. These meetings allow students not only to engage with culture but also to encounter the people who shape it every day. On 27th November, we had the pleasure of having over Michał Kwieciński, an outstanding film director and producer.

Mr. Kwieciński, the creator of many acclaimed films and television series, including the recent box office success Chopin, Chopin!, shared with us a fascinating perspective from behind the scenes of film production. The meeting, hosted by me and the teacher Aleksander Jarnicki, was an engaging interview that went far beyond theory. Our students learned about the reality of working on film set, the differences between directing and producing, and the long creative processes behind film projects. Mr. Kwieciński also spoke openly about his own career path, reflecting on his previous choice to pursue a PhD in organic chemistry.

A significant part of the discussion focused on Chopin, Chopin! and the director’s fascination with the composer. Rather than creating a traditional biographical film, Mr. Kwieciński focused on Fryderyk Chopin’s emotional world and illness, often discussed in his letters. Our guest answered questions about the symbolism used in the movie, including the recurring presence of pigs, as well as the challenges that come with making a multilingual production. This is an especially relevant topic for our international school community, with multiple languages taught and used every day.

The meeting concluded with Mr. Kwieciński giving advice for aspiring filmmakers and emphasising the importance of curiosity and perseverance in the film industry. He spoke warmly about his past TV shows and Masza Wągrocka’s minor role as the composer’s sister, Ludwika. Overall, the event was not only an inspiring encounter with a remarkable artist but also a powerful encouragement for our students to pursue their creative passions. We would like to sincerely thank Mr. Michał Kwieciński for his time, openness, and fascinating stories, which made this event truly unforgettable.
