Why Jean Monnet?
Monnet Jean (1888-1979) – a well-educated French politician and economist, a citizen of the world. Between the wars he worked for international political and economic institutions. He was Deputy Secretary General of the League of Nations. In World War I Monnet served on the Coordination Committee. After 1945 he could use his wide experience while participating in the process of European integration.
Since he realized how important coal and steel industries were for the process of cooperation in Europe, he conceived the ECSC and became the first president of its High Authority. In 1955, Monnet founded the Action Committee for the United States of Europe which supported economic cooperation in Europe. He promoted the idea of the united Europe as he believed that only the united Europe could guarantee peace.
One of the European Commission projects has been named after Jean Monnet. Its aim is to increase knowledge of European integration among scientists and students. The Jean Monnet project contributes to creating new departments, courses, studies and European research; part of its funds goes to scholarships.
There is so much biographical information about him… but why is Jean Monnet the patron of our school?
Because he endeavoured to strengthen peace around the world.
Because he had a vision. He constructively changed Europe.
He loved people and life. He had great aspirations.
